As a culture, we’ve lost our faith in the importance of the family. We’ve also lost our faith in the importance of faith itself. These two institutions do more to produce healthier, happier, and more virtuous citizens than any other social institution or government program.
That’s why we exist. The North Carolina Values Institute (NCVI) is committed to restoring these foundational pillars of society. Through education, advocacy, and legal action, we work to promote faith, family, and freedom in our culture. A key part of this mission is our work petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court and federal courts through over 50 amicus briefs on critical pro-life, pro-family, and pro-religious freedom issues.
An amicus brief, or amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief, is a legal document filed by individuals or organizations that are not directly involved in a case but have a strong interest in its outcome. These briefs provide additional perspectives, legal arguments, and relevant expertise to help the court make an informed decision. They are especially important in high-stakes cases, as they allow us to highlight broader societal, legal, and moral implications that might not be fully addressed by the parties involved.
From landmark cases like Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade, to Masterpiece Cakeshop and 303 Creative, which defended religious liberty, NCVI has been a steadfast advocate for constitutional rights and moral values. We have stood for the protection of women’s sports, the rights of parents in education, and the defense of life at every stage.
